Native Marketing in 2022: How to maximize your ROI through copywriting

Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen a huge shift in the Natives market. There’s been a massive influx of new businesses, affiliates, and other advertisers coming into the space to take advantage of the low CPCs and huge scale potential that Native Marketing offers. 

And one aspect of this is causing a big impact on ROI… repeated content and identical campaigns. 

Let me give you an example. 

  1. You run an offer for hypertension. 
  2. You run an ad spy tool to find winning copy and create combinations. 
  3. So you put together a campaign using this combination AND use the same landing page as the winning offer.

Now the ROI on these campaigns is going to dramatically fall because you’re splitting the profit with the original offer owner you’ve copied. To make matters worse, 5 more people come along, doing the same thing as you, and they start running the same offer with the same campaigns, copy, creatives etc. 

And in the end… you get low CTR, high CPCs, a lower CVR, and a lower ROI. (excuse all the abbreviations…)

Quite simply… copy and pasting what everyone else is doing is lazy and a big waste of money. It doesn’t yield the same results that it used to.

Now, we know this from experience. Around June 2021, we found that lots of our campaigns that previously had $0.40 CPCs started to cost us around $1 per click, because we got lazy. We didn’t update the copy, test new material, new headlines, or advertorials… we just got comfortable that our winning adverts still performed, even at a much lower ROI. 

And that is why we’ve been investing heavily into copywriting in the past 6 months. In fact, we’ve even established an entire copywriting division because we’ve seen the huge benefit it brings and we want to offer this out to more people, to help them improve their own campaigns.

By constantly optimizing and updating our copy, we have been able to dramatically drop the $1 clicks from June, back down to $0.40 – $0.50 clicks all day on Taboola across the back end of 2021, and it’s continued here in January 2022.

We’ve fully backed this decision, and we believe that unique copy is going to be more important than bids in 2022. 

Why should you run good, unique content and advertorials? 

Well, they help to prepare your customers for conversion. They inform, educate, and excite your readers that a solution to their problem is just one click away. Advertorials are often the first touch point your customer has with your product, so they’re a great way to get the excitement and intrigue running before they see an offer. 

Historically, you could direct link to an offer or VSL and get good results, but as the market evolves, this is proving to be less effective and more expensive. We’ve seen that it doesn’t work anymore and we highly advise you to avoid this

Instead, introducing new advertorials and pre-sell pages to your funnels can help you to get away from the noise of the market. If someone sees the same ad three times, and then sees your shiny new one… they’re likely to avoid the repeated content and click on the thing that’s “new”. 

It’ll take a little while to find a winning piece, but as soon as you do, it’ll pay you back 100x over. So here are a couple things to keep in mind:

  • Running a constant stream of new content allows you to test what works, and what doesn’t. Think about the different customer pain points you want to address.
  • What angle are you pitching your product or service that will resonate with them the most?
  • What length of content converts best?

The God Ad 

The most powerful part of writing new and great copy is the discovery of your God ad. This is your advertorial that just cannot be beaten. No matter what changes you make, this advertorial will just make you money day in and day out. 

But getting to this point requires testing, and requires new and unique content that the market hasn’t seen before. The thing you need to focus on is that the results that follow are so worth it. We’ve seen 200-300% increases in conversions by introducing new content, and we can reinvest these profits into new variations to try and increase this even further. 

…I’m sure I don’t need to say it again, but content is king and is the difference between making money and printing money

What to do next? 

As we’re starting off the year and we’re all ready to start reviving our campaigns and see some serious growth, there are 4 things that you need to do:

  1. Take stock of your current offers. Look at the content you’re running and see if you think it could perform better. The chances are that if each piece of content you’re running isn’t your own, it can do better. 
  2. Start to come up with 1-2 advertorials for each offer. We advise split testing at least one long-form (around 700 words) and one short form (300-400 word) advertorial for each offer. 
  3. Test your content out on different networks. See where they’re running profitably, and start to move your budget around, putting more into the areas that are converting best. 
  4. Take some of the profits from your campaigns and look into new variations and angles for your content. Do this regularly to find your very own God ad
